Dead Space 3 review: Um, yeah, okay

!!! Disclaimer !!!

Before I begin I have to tell you I am reviewing the Xbox 360 version of the game.  Also, due to EA’s online pass requirement exceeding my review budget of a used stamp and dead moth, I did not spring for the online pass so this will only be about the single player mode.  Just keep that in mind, even if the multi-player is hella fun.

Dead Space 3 (PS3, Xbox360, PC)  has a really great face and a winning personality.  I will add that I really wanted to like this game. It has all the things I like in videogames: great graphics, crazy sci-fi story, you get to shoot cult members in the face, zombies (kind of), and a trailer with a Phil Collins song.  All that should equal a win, right?

No, not exactly, because I was not having fun while playing it...

I know I’m not the only one to be excited about Injustice: Gods Among Us by NetherRealm studios. If you are unaware, you can watch this story trailer:

Awesome Gamer Dad

So I was working on my Badass Married guy’s guide to gaming, and I came across this  article about a dad that hacked Donkey Kong for his 3 year old and he replaced Mario with Pauline. Horror in videogames, is it possible?

I have played Videogames all my life, all kinds but I have had a fascination with horror games.  Like horror movies, it is hard to keep the scares up after you have played it once. Case in point: we all jumped when the zombie dogs broke through the window in the original Resident Evil game but did you jump after the second play through? Just like a horror movie, when we know when something is going to happen it becomes less exciting.  What to do?  Programmers need to make the scares random so that we have no way of anticipating when or where they will happen.

A few games that do this come to mind.  Left 4 Dead(PC, PS3,Xbox360) has a lot of action and is actually really scary when you hear the crying of a witch and you don’t really know where she is...

Tropes vs Women in Video Games controversy and my thoughts

I have been following this story for some time now and I have been truly disgusted by all the backlash and the reactions from the videogame community.  If you do not know about Tropes vs Women in Video Games, it is a video series from Anita Sarkeesian  and is described on her website thus:

ABOUT THE SERIES:
The Tropes vs Women in Video Games project aims to examine the plot devices and patterns most often associated with female characters in gaming from a systemic, big picture perspective. This series will include critical analysis of many beloved games and characters, but remember that it is both possible (and even necessary) to simultaneously enjoy media while also being critical of its more problematic or pernicious aspects.

Sounds awesome...
